Scriptorium

The word scriptorium referred to a piece of furniture, the writing desk, on which educated monks copied and illuminated manuscripts. In this way they participated in the transmission of knowledge which remained the prerogative of the wealthy classes, as books were such rare and expensive objects. With an area of 159 m², the scriptorium (or monks’ rooms) was also a place assigned for study and small jobs such as mending, sewing, etc.
